Our current plans for MSB is to provide support for a number of database products along with its own keyed file system which itself we will be enhancing.

This poll is for which database interfaces to consider first. While all the databases on the list would be considered at some point, we are looking to determine which DB is at the TOP of the wish list.

Although the open source philosophy of MSB appeals for a direct interface to MySQL and Postgres, as other open source language/environment (PHP for example), I have voted for a Generic ODBC interface, as this would allow MSB to interface to any compliant database, thus the system would be more open and compatible with other applications right from the beginning.

I'm nevertheless giving an ordered list of what should be implemented IMHO :

1) Generic ODBC interface (Linux/Unix/Windows)

2a) MySql
2b) Postgres
=> For the open source philosophy

3) Microsoft Sql Server
=> For the Windows variations of MSB

4a) Oracle
4b) DB2
=> For people with lots of money Wink

5a) ProvideX file system
5b) BBx keyed files
5c) Thoroughbred keyed files
=> Last on my list because files from other Basics could be converted (even big ones) and maybe a system similar to what currently exists in PxPlus could be developed first (using a pipe connected to the other BB interpreter process)

I'm using the 'C' API connection to MySQL with the HTTP Basic interpreter application server project I'm working on. MySQL works well under Windows and Linux in the testing I have done.

There is nothing wrong with having a BB file system as the primary and using SQL as an add-on. If an add-on approach is taken then it opens the door for commercial plug-ins as well.

Mike,

From a development standpoint, what Database would be the easiest for you? Also, any guesses as to timeframes?

As we have access to the existing PxPlus MySql interface, this will likely be the first we implement. As for timeframe, we are targeting late fall to have the interface up and running -- ideally with the initial release.
